You need to fool the game into thinking it got an update or DLC to "inject" your mods into the game, overwriting the original game files that way. Here's how you make this "DLC" folder. Go to "steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead" they are the same, you just need to unpack the file in the 'addons'-folder; and it works without re-downloading.
